  • US Justice Department brings new criminal charges against former FBI director James Comey.
  • Case centers on social media post interpreted as threat against President Donald Trump.

The US Justice Department has filed criminal charges against former FBI director James Comey, accusing him of threatening President Donald Trump in a social media post that officials say could be interpreted as a coded message of violence.

The indictment, filed in federal court in the Eastern District of North Carolina, alleges Comey transmitted a threat across state lines by posting an image showing seashells arranged in the numbers “8647.”

Prosecutors argue the post could be read as a reference combining “86,” a slang term meaning to remove or eject someone, and “47,” which supporters say refers to Trump as the 47th US president.

Comey rejected the allegations in a video message posted after the indictment.

“I’m still innocent. I’m still not afraid,” he said, adding that “this is not how the Department of Justice is supposed to be.”

He previously deleted the post after backlash emerged, saying he was unaware the numbers could be associated with violence and emphasizing that he opposes it in any form.

His legal team has not publicly commented on the new charges.

The case marks another escalation in long-running tensions between Trump and Comey, who was dismissed from his role as FBI director during Trump’s first term amid disputes over the Russia investigation involving the 2016 election.

Trump and his allies have previously accused Comey of misconduct, while Comey has been a frequent critic of the administration’s handling of law enforcement and intelligence agencies.

The Justice Department’s action follows a separate, earlier case against Comey that was dismissed by a federal judge over procedural issues related to the appointment of a prosecutor. That decision is currently under appeal.

Legal analysts expect the latest indictment to face constitutional challenges, particularly under the First Amendment, which provides broad protections for political speech in the United States.

The case also unfolds amid broader controversy over the Justice Department’s direction under Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, who has pursued several politically sensitive prosecutions since taking office.

The renewed charges add to growing political tensions in Washington, where legal battles involving former senior officials continue to intersect with an already polarized political environment.

The outcome of the case is likely to have significant implications for the boundaries of political speech, prosecutorial authority, and the relationship between law enforcement institutions and the White House.
