  • 'Israeli' Police officers seized a Hungarian flag from an anti-government protester, claiming its colors were too similar to the Palestinian flag and could cause a "provocation."
  • The confiscation occurred at a demonstration at the Karkur Junction in northern 'Israel', despite the protester clarifying the flag's actual origin.
  • The incident follows a recent pattern of police crackdowns on Palestinian symbols.

'Israeli' police recently confiscated a Hungarian flag from a demonstrator during an anti-government protest, arguing that the banner bore too close a resemblance to the Palestinian flag and could incite a public disturbance.

According to a report by Haaretz, the incident took place last Saturday during a demonstration at the Karkur Junction in northern 'Israel'.

Alleged flag confusion.

Both the Hungarian and Palestinian flags prominently feature the colors green, white, and red. However, their arrangements are distinctly different—the Hungarian flag consists of three horizontal bands, while the Palestinian flag features horizontal stripes with a red chevron at the hoist and includes the color black, which is absent from the Hungarian design.

Despite these differences, police officers approached the demonstrator and demanded he surrender the banner.

"When I explained to him that it was the Hungarian flag, he said, 'You might understand that, but others don’t,'" the protester told Haaretz.

The demonstrator reportedly offered to remove the flag and return it to his vehicle to defuse the situation. However, the officer refused this compromise and proceeded to confiscate the flag entirely. It was only returned to the protester after the demonstration had concluded.

As of the report's publication, the 'Israel' Police had not responded to media inquiries regarding the confiscation.

Broader crackdown on symbols

While displaying the Palestinian flag is not strictly illegal under 'Israeli' law, police regularly seize them at protests and public gatherings, frequently citing the prevention of public disturbances or "provocations" as justification.

The incident at Karkur Junction highlights heightened sensitivities and enforcement actions surrounding national symbols at protests.

It comes just days after a similar incident in the central city of Modiin, where police detained a local resident for wearing a kippa (a traditional Jewish head covering) that featured both a Palestinian and an 'Israeli' flag.

In that instance, officers reportedly cut up the religious garment to physically remove the Palestinian symbol.
