  • The King aims to strengthen UK-US ties amid current geopolitical tensions.
  • The trip includes a meeting with US President Trump, an address to Congress, and visits to New York and Virginia.

Buckingham Palace has confirmed that King Charles and Queen Camilla will not be meeting with survivors of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein during their upcoming state visit to the United States.

The trip, scheduled for April 27 to 30, comes amid a highly sensitive diplomatic climate.

Navigating strained diplomatic ties

The state visit arrives at a time of "choppy diplomatic waters" for the UK and the US, with relations strained over major geopolitical issues, including the war in Iran.

Despite these tensions, Palace sources emphasize that the King will play a critical, unique role in reinforcing a transatlantic partnership that has "survived many presidencies and of course many reigns."

A spokeswoman for the Foreign Office echoed this sentiment, highlighting the strategic importance of the monarch's visit.

"Yes, we are close allies, we do disagree on things, but that doesn't detract from the value that both sides get from this relationship and have done over many decades," the spokeswoman stated.

Focus on domestic abuse advocacy

While the royal couple will not engage with Epstein survivors, Queen Camilla’s schedule includes significant advocacy work.

She is expected to meet with representatives from various groups campaigning against domestic abuse and violence against women during several events throughout the visit.

A packed diplomatic and cultural itinerary

The official itinerary released on Tuesday outlines a sweeping tour across three key regions:

  • Washington DC: The King and Queen will spend two days in the capital, attending a tea party, a garden party, and a ceremonial military review. Crucially, King Charles will hold a private meeting with President Donald Trump, followed by a state dinner at the White House. The diplomatic pinnacle of the visit will be the King's highly anticipated address to Congress.
  • New York: The royal couple will visit the 9/11 memorial to meet with first responders. Their New York schedule also includes a community project in Harlem, a literacy event celebrating the centenary of Winnie the Pooh, a business summit, and a high-profile reception.
  • Virginia: Aligning with his long-standing environmental advocacy, the King will visit a national park to engage with Appalachian culture and meet indigenous communities. The royals will also attend a community celebration marking the 250th anniversary of American independence.
