  • Claimed photo of airstrike on Iranian base entirely AI-generated.
  • Original image sourced from Google Maps, manipulated with AI tools.

Social media accounts circulated a photo claiming to show the aftermath of an airstrike, allegedly by 'Israel' or US forces, on an Iranian airbase. The post suggested the target was "decoy aircraft" rather than real planes.

Investigators have confirmed the image is entirely fabricated using generative artificial intelligence and bears no relation to actual events.

AI Tools Used to Fabricate Photo

The original image is a simple screenshot from Google Maps showing a runway, without any bomb damage or destroyed aircraft. The AI tool "Nanobanana" was then used to overlay explosions, debris, and damaged planes, creating a misleading visual.

Experts noted inconsistencies in shadows and lighting that do not match natural sunlight angles. The placement of explosions and debris appears "geometrically perfect," unlike real-world blast patterns.

Fabrication Was Fast and Simple

The investigative report demonstrated that the fake image can be reproduced in under five minutes using only a simple text prompt in the AI software. No advanced photo editing skills are required, highlighting how easily false visuals can spread online.

This case underscores the growing risk of AI-generated content misleading the public in conflict reporting, emphasizing the need for verification before sharing sensational images.
