The Jordanian government drafted a plan to secure the Kingdom’s water supply following the expiration of the water agreement with ‘Israel’, which provided 50 million cubic meters annually, a government source told Roya.
The source said work on the plan began last year under directives from Prime Minister Jafar Hassan, before the agreement expired, to ensure the sustainability of Jordan’s water security.
Agreement lapses
The water agreement expired three months ago and has not been renewed, the source said, noting it had been a key component of water cooperation between Jordan and ‘Israel’.
The source stressed that national interest will determine Jordan’s options and priorities, as well as any future measures related to the issue.
National carrier project advances
The source also revealed that final steps are underway to -financially- finalize the national water carrier project with international and local entities.
The agreement is expected to be signed before the end of next month, allowing implementation to begin this year.
The project is set to supply the Kingdom with 300 million cubic meters of drinking water annually, helping meet demand and address water shortages over the next decade.
Reports on ‘Israel’ stance
In recent weeks, media reports said that ‘Israel’ does not intend to renew the water sale agreement with Jordan.
