At least 55 people, including 25 security officers, were killed in Mexico following the death of Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera, one of the country’s most notorious drug lords.

The deaths occurred across 16 states, according to Omar García Harfuch, who reported that cartel attacks targeted security forces after the announcement of El Mencho’s death. Authorities confirmed 30 cartel members were neutralized during the unrest.

Security response

As a precaution, authorities closed 85 roads in 11 states. Traffic later returned to normal after a strong deployment of federal forces. El Mencho’s body was transferred under tight security from a federal attorney facility in Hangar to the Mexico City Institute of Forensic Sciences.

El Mencho was fatally wounded during a military operation in Tapalpa, about 130 kilometers south of Guadalajara, and died Sunday while being airlifted to Mexico City.

Upcoming events in Jalisco

Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco, will host four matches of the World Cup in June at the 48,000-seat Akron Stadium. The same stadium will also hold the World Cup intercontinental playoff matches between New Caledonia, Jamaica, and the Democratic Republic of Congo from March 26–28.

The surge in violence underscores the ongoing instability linked to Mexico’s cartel conflicts and the challenges authorities face in maintaining security ahead of major international events.
