  • The US and Iran are scheduled to hold a second round of direct nuclear negotiations in Geneva this coming Tuesday, according to Axios, with high-level delegations led by Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff for the US and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi for Iran.
  • While Trump is pushing for a deal that includes "zero uranium enrichment," he is simultaneously pursuing a military buildup in the Gulf and publicly endorsing "regime change" as a fallback should diplomacy fail.

The United States and Iran are preparing for a second round of direct nuclear negotiations in Geneva on Tuesday, as both sides work toward a deal aimed at preventing military conflict, Axios reported Saturday.

The US delegation will include senior adviser Jared Kushner and White House Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff.

Iran's team is expected to be led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, with Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Hamad Al Busaidi attending as mediator. The talks follow recent backchannel communications.

This week, Witkoff shared messages with the Omani foreign minister that were documented and passed to Iran's top security official, Ali Larijani, during his visit to Muscat.

Larijani confirmed receiving the US document in an interview on Iranian state television.

US President Donald Trump has pushed for a diplomatic solution but warned of severe consequences if talks fail.

"Either we will make a deal or we will have to do something very tough like last time," Trump said.

He has repeatedly demanded that any agreement include zero uranium enrichment inside Iran.

"The Iranians want to have talks, but they still haven't shown they are willing to take action regarding their nuclear program," Trump added.

Asked about “regime change” in Tehran, Trump replied that it "seems like that would be the best thing that could happen.”

Despite the diplomatic track, Trump has ordered a major US military buildup in the Gulf, including the dispatch of a second aircraft carrier strike group.
