Nobel laureate Narges Mohammadi handed six-year prison term by Iran, sparking international concern.
Iranian human rights activist and 2023 Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi has been sentenced by an Iranian court to a six-year prison term, her lawyer confirmed to news agencies on Sunday.
According to her lawyer, Mostafa Nili, Mohammadi was given six years in prison on charges of “gathering and collusion to commit crimes,” and an additional 18 months for alleged propaganda activities.
In addition to her prison term, the activist was reportedly banned from leaving Iran for two years and ordered into two years of internal exile to the eastern city of Khosf in South Khorasan province.
Mohammadi, 53, has spent much of the past decade behind bars for her outspoken advocacy, which includes campaigning against Iran’s use of the death penalty and compulsory dress codes for women. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for her long‑standing human rights work.
The lawyer’s statement comes as Mohammadi continues a hunger strike she began in early February, according to supporters.
Islamic Republic authorities have not publicly acknowledged the verdict. The case continues to draw international attention and renewed calls from human rights groups for her release.
