His Majesty King Abdullah II Ibn Al Hussein was born in Amman on Jan. 30, 1962, the eldest son of the late King Hussein bin Talal and Princess Muna Al Hussein.
He received his early education at the Islamic Educational College in Amman, before studying at Deerfield Academy in the United States, the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, and the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University in Washington, DC.
Military background
King Abdullah II trained at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and went on to serve in the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army, rising from First Lieutenant to Major General.
He later commanded the Royal Special Forces, overseeing their modernization in line with international military standards and establishing what is now the Special Operations Command.
Crown Prince and accession
During King Hussein’s reign, His Majesty served as Regent on several occasions.
A Royal Decree issued on January 24, 1999, appointed him Crown Prince, and in February 1999 he assumed his constitutional powers as King following his father’s death.
