Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said that she hoped US President Donald Trump would help end the conflict in Ukraine so that she could nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Speaking at a press conference after meeting German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Meloni said,
"I hope that one day we can award a Nobel Peace Prize to Donald Trump. I trust that if he makes a difference in achieving a just and lasting peace for Ukraine, finally, we too could nominate Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize."

Meloni’s comments reflect her cordial relationship with Trump, who has expressed frustration over failing to win the prize in the past.

Trump’s stance on the Nobel Peace Prize

In a message to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, made public on January 19, Trump said that failing to receive the prize meant he no longer felt obliged “to think purely of peace.”

Trump’s new international initiative

On January 22, Trump unveiled his “Board of Peace”, initially designed to oversee the Gaza truce and its reconstruction. The board has since evolved into a mechanism aiming to address various international conflicts.

Italy has been invited to join the board, but Meloni said the country faces constitutional constraints that prevent full participation.
