  • Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lok Rasmussen says the United States will not acquire Greenland, calling it a “red line” for Denmark.
  • Trump announced a “framework agreement” on Greenland and the Arctic during the Davos World Economic Forum, temporarily suspending planned tariffs.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lok Rasmussen said Wednesday that the United States will not acquire Greenland, describing the island as a “red line” for Denmark. His remarks followed US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a “framework agreement” on Greenland with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.

Rasmussen declined to comment on whether the framework constitutes a binding future agreement, saying, “We should not sit here on television to evaluate that.” He emphasized, “The United States will not own Greenland. This is our red line.”

Trump’s Davos statement

Earlier Wednesday, Trump posted on Truth Social that he had a “very productive meeting” with Rutte during the Davos forum. He said the meeting resulted in a framework for a future agreement concerning Greenland and the entire Arctic region.

Trump also noted that the framework included suspending tariffs scheduled to take effect February 1, which had targeted European countries involved in Greenland-related matters.

The US president has repeatedly argued that Greenland is essential for national security and necessary for constructing a “golden shield.”

Strategic importance of Greenland

Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark and the world’s largest island, occupies a central location in the Arctic, a region gaining importance due to melting ice and emerging new trade routes.
