Speaking at the World Economic Forum, US President Donald Trump extensively praised the US economy and his own leadership, calling the United States the “economic engine of the planet.”
He also warned that Europe is “not heading in the right direction,” blaming mass migration and a focus on green energy policies for harming the continent.
Trump went on to address controversial foreign policy issues, including comments on Greenland and Venezuela:
‘Only the United States can secure Greenland’
Trump asserted that “no nation or group of nations is in any position to be able to secure Greenland other than the United States,” calling the US “a great power, much greater than people even understand,” and claiming that “they found that out two weeks ago in Venezuela.”
The remarks underscore his administration’s assertive stance on Arctic strategy and geopolitical competition.
Trump said that Europe has “a choice.” “You can say yes, and we will be very appreciative, or you can say no, and we will remember. A strong and secure America means a strong NATO, and that's one reason why I'm working every day to ensure our military is very powerful,” he said.
US involvement in Venezuela
He also said the US is “helping Venezuela” to “make more money than they’ve made in a long time,” referring to the recent ouster of Nicolás Maduro, and added: “Once the attack was over they said, let’s make a deal. More countries should do that.”
His comments come as he speaks live from Davos, the annual summit of global political and business leaders.
Canada 'lives because of the United States'
US President also said Canada "should be grateful" to Washington, a day after Prime Minister Mark Carney warned of a rupture to the US-led global system.
"I watched your prime minister yesterday. He wasn't so grateful," Trump told the World Economic Forum of Carney's speech, which drew a rare standing ovation from the Davos audience.
"Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements," Trump said.
