  • Indonesian rescuers locate wreckage of a small plane lost en route from Yogyakarta to Makassar.
  • All ten passengers and crew remain missing amid challenging terrain and poor visibility.

Indonesian rescue teams discovered the wreckage of a small plane Sunday, a day after it lost contact over eastern Indonesia. No signs of the ten passengers on board have been reported.

Flight details and mission

The aircraft, operated by Indonesia Air Transport, departed Yogyakarta heading to Makassar. It vanished from radar shortly after receiving instructions from air traffic control to adjust its approach path.

The plane carried three officials from the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, tasked with monitoring regional resources, and seven crew members. More than 1,000 personnel are involved in the ongoing search.

Rescue challenges

Mohammad Aref Anwar, head of the Makassar Search and Rescue Agency, said the teams identified parts of the plane, including the fuselage, tail, and windows. Airborne rescue units have also been deployed to locate potential survivors.

Local military official Bangun Nawoo noted that rescuers face difficulties due to rugged terrain and heavy fog, slowing recovery efforts.

Aviation safety concerns

Indonesia relies heavily on air travel to connect its thousands of islands, but aviation safety has been a persistent challenge. Recent incidents include a helicopter crash in South Kalimantan in September that killed all eight on board, and another fatal helicopter accident in remote Ilaga, Papua, less than two weeks later.

Authorities continue to search for survivors and investigate the cause of the crash.
