  • Russia says Taiwan is an integral part of China and rejects any foreign-backed independence.
  • Moscow warns that interference in the Taiwan issue risks destabilizing East Asia.

Russia has reaffirmed its firm position on Taiwan, underscoring the depth of its strategic partnership with China amid rising regional tensions.

Speaking on Monday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow recognizes Taiwan as an “inalienable part of Chinese territory” and strongly opposes any form of independence supported by external powers, according to official statements.

China’s internal affair

Lavrov described the Taiwan issue as a “purely Chinese internal matter,” rejecting any international involvement and criticizing Western efforts to internationalize the dispute. He said China has the full right to take necessary measures to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity, framing Russia’s stance as diplomatic backing for Beijing’s position.

The remarks come at a sensitive moment marked by heightened tensions in the Taiwan Strait and following increased United States military and diplomatic activity in the Indo-Pacific region.

Strategic alignment

Analysts say Moscow’s position strengthens China’s hand in its diplomatic confrontation with Western powers and reflects a broader political alignment. They note that China’s support for Russia on European security concerns is increasingly mirrored by Moscow’s unconditional backing of Beijing in East Asia.

Lavrov also warned against provocations that could destabilize the region, stressing that mutual respect for sovereignty remains the only path to preventing escalation.

Russia’s stance positions it as China’s most significant international backer outside Asia, complicating calculations around any potential military or political intervention aimed at protecting the authorities in Taipei.
