The Latakia Health Directorate announced on Monday that the death toll from attacks carried out by groups linked to remnants of the former regime has risen to four, following violence during protests on Sunday.

According to Syria’s state news agency SANA, citing medical sources, at least 108 people were wounded, including civilians and members of the Internal Security Forces, in what officials described as a serious security escalation aimed at destabilizing the coastal city.

Hospitals under pressure

Medical teams at public and private hospitals in Latakia continue to treat the wounded. Several cases were described as critical, with injuries caused by live ammunition and shrapnel from explosive devices.

Reports said armed groups directly targeted gatherings and security patrols, exploiting the protests to launch attacks. The assaults resulted in a high number of casualties among civilians and police officers.

The latest figures follow earlier reports that cited three fatalities and dozens of injuries.

Security warning

Officials said the developments underscore the fragile security situation along Syria’s coast, where pockets linked to the ousted Assad regime are accused of attempting to revive chaos. Bashar al-Assad was removed from power on Dec. 8, 2024.

Security leaders stressed that operations will continue until all those involved are arrested, describing the incident as a “massacre” and warning that civil peace remains a red line.

The Health Directorate confirmed that hospitals have sufficient medical supplies and urged residents to donate blood to support local blood banks.

Latakia remains in a state of mourning and uncertainty, as families await updates on relatives with severe injuries amid official pledges to hold those responsible to account.
