  • Palestinian detainees report severe medical neglect in 'Ofer' and 'Megiddo' prisons.
  • Rights body urges international action as 'Israel' prisons face accountability calls.

The Commission of Detainees’ and Ex-Detainees’ Affairs revealed on Sunday multiple serious medical cases among Palestinian detainees held in 'Israel’s' Ofer and Megiddo prisons, warning of ongoing medical neglect that threatens detainees’ lives.

The findings were based on recent visits by the commission’s lawyers to the prisons.

Beatings and untreated injuries

The commission highlighted the case of Nader Al-Sheikh, from the village of Beit Surik near Ramallah, who is held under a four-month administrative detention order in Ofer prison. Al-Sheikh suffers from severe dental pain after being beaten during his arrest, which caused the upper dental crown to fall out.

Despite his need for urgent treatment, the commission said 'Israeli' authorities have ignored his condition.

Another detainee, Mohammed Khalaf, 19, from Al-Amari refugee camp in Ramallah, is also held under six months of administrative detention in Ofer prison. He suffers from persistent pain in his left leg and requires medical care that has not been provided.

Post-surgery complications

In 'Megiddo' prison, the commission documented the case of Ahmad Abed, eighteen, from Tulkarm. Abed experiences dizziness, vomiting, and acute abdominal pain, along with severe constipation following an emergency gallbladder surgery performed at 'Afula' hospital.

According to the commission, Abed’s condition has deteriorated due to inadequate follow-up care inside the prison.

Calls for international intervention

The commission held 'Israel' Prison Service fully responsible for what it described as a continuing pattern of medical negligence against Palestinian detainees. It called on international organizations, human rights groups, and the International Committee of the Red Cross to intervene immediately and fulfill their responsibilities toward detainees.

Palestinian rights groups have repeatedly warned that systematic medical neglect in 'Israel' prisons has escalated since the start of 'Israeli' war on Gaza, raising fears of preventable deaths among detainees.
