Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani spoke by phone on Wednesday with Ahmed al-Ahmed, the man who courageously wrestled a gun from a shooter during the deadly attack at Bondi Beach in Sydney.
According to a video of the call obtained by Anadolu, Shaibani told Ahmed that President Ahmad al-Sharaa asked him to check on his health and convey the president’s get-well wishes.
Ahmed expressed his gratitude to both President Sharaa and the foreign minister for their concern. “In the near future, I will come back to my country and see those beautiful, heroic faces that removed injustice and ended oppression against the people,” he told Shaibani.
Videos captured Ahmed, a 43-year-old Syrian from al-Nayrab village in the Idlib governorate, running toward the attacker and taking the gun from him during the attack, which killed 15 people and injured 42 others.
Ahmed, who holds Australian citizenship, was shot five times in the arm and shoulder and was hospitalized at St. George Hospital in southern Sydney. He has been hailed as a hero by Australian leaders, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, as well as by US President Donald Trump.
