  • Six Bangladeshi peacekeepers killed and eight injured in drone attack on UN base in Abyei, Sudan.
  • Bangladesh’s interim government calls for urgent medical aid for the wounded.

Six Bangladeshi peacekeepers were killed and eight others injured in a drone attack on a United Nations base in Abyei, southern Sudan, authorities confirmed on Saturday.

Muhammad Yunus, head of Bangladesh’s interim government, expressed shock over the attack, saying, “The United Nations has already been requested to take urgent measures to ensure the highest level of medical treatment and necessary assistance to the injured peacekeepers.”

The Bangladeshi army added on Facebook that the incident took place in Abyei and that fighting in the area was still ongoing. There has been no immediate comment from the UN mission.

The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) has been deployed in the region since 2011. Abyei, an oil-rich territory, is administered by South Sudan and Sudan, both of which claim the area and have experienced repeated conflict. The UN mandate for the mission was renewed just last month.
