  • Russian authorities block Roblox, claiming the platform spreads extremist content and LGBT propaganda.

Russian authorities have moved to block access to the popular American gaming platform Roblox, citing the dissemination of content that violates Russian law.

The Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor) announced the ban on Wednesday, claiming that the platform contains “extremist content” and “LGBT propaganda.”

Roskomnadzor stated that Roblox is “rife with inappropriate content that can negatively impact the spiritual and moral development of children.” The watchdog did not provide specific examples of the content deemed extremist.

Key Allegations

The Russian government’s action reflects its increasingly strict stance on digital content:

  • Extremist Content: Roblox is accused of hosting materials considered extremist under Russian law. The country maintains a centralized internet blacklist to censor content, including anything classified as extremist.
  • LGBT Propaganda: The ban also cites concerns over the promotion of LGBT-related content.

This follows a 2023 ruling in which Russia classified the “international LGBT movement” as extremist and prohibited promotion of “non-traditional sexual relations” to all ages. Other foreign platforms have faced similar restrictions under the same regulations.

Roblox’s Position and Global Context

Roblox Corporation has yet to issue an official response to the Russian ban. The company emphasizes on its website that it is “rigorously committed to keeping users safe,” using AI moderation tools, human review teams, and partnerships with child safety experts.

Russia is not the first country to restrict Roblox over content concerns. The platform has previously faced bans or limitations in countries such as Iraq and Turkey, often due to fears of adult predators exploiting the platform or exposing children to inappropriate material. Globally, Roblox has faced scrutiny and legal challenges over user safety, sexual content, financial exploitation, and exposure to hate speech.

Part of a Broader Trend of Internet Censorship

The Roblox ban is part of a broader pattern of Russia restricting access to Western media and technology platforms. Roskomnadzor has repeatedly enforced local laws on foreign internet companies, often threatening fines or total platform blocks for non-compliance.

Experts say this move further consolidates state control over the Russian digital space, a trend that has accelerated since 2022. Analysts describe it as an emerging “IT curtain” that aims to restrict access to information deemed morally harmful or politically sensitive under Russian law.
