Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) orchestrated a plot to assassinate ‘Israel's’ ambassador to Mexico, Einat Kranz-Neiger, which was thwarted by Mexican security services last summer, according to US and ‘Israeli’ officials.

"The plot was contained and does not pose a current threat," the US official told Axios.

The scheme, initiated by the IRGC's elite Quds Force Unit 11000 at the end of 2024, targeted Kranz-Neiger as part of Iran's broader campaign against ‘Israeli’ interests abroad.

The plot was masterminded by a Quds Force operative who had previously managed Iranian agents across Latin America from Tehran's embassy in Venezuela before returning to headquarters in Tehran.

This unit has a history of attempting attacks on ‘Israeli’ targets in regions like Australia and Europe.

The assassination attempt remained active through the first half of 2025 until Mexican authorities intervened and contained it over the summer, ensuring no ongoing threat.

A US official described the incident as "just the latest in a long history of assassination attempts by Iran around the world," urging vigilance in countries with Iranian diplomatic presence.

‘Israeli’ Foreign Ministry spokesperson Oren Marmorstein expressed gratitude to Mexico's security and law enforcement agencies for their role in thwarting the attack.

The plot occurs amid heightened tensions between Iran and ‘Israel’, exacerbated by an ‘Israeli’ campaign against Iran in June 2025, which involved US strikes against Iranian nuclear sites.
