Elon Musk launches Grokipedia, AI-powered encyclopedia to rival Wikipedia
Elon Musk’s company xAI unveiled Grokipedia on Monday, positioning it as a direct competitor to Wikipedia, which Musk has repeatedly criticized for ideological bias.
The newly launched site, currently at version 0.1, already hosts over 885,000 articles, though it remains far behind Wikipedia’s more than seven million English-language entries. Musk has promised an upcoming version 1.0, describing it as “10X better” than the current iteration, which he claims is “better than Wikipedia” even now.
“The goal of Grok and Grokipedia.com is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. We will never be perfect, but we shall nonetheless strive towards that goal,” Musk wrote on X following the launch.
Originally planned for release at the end of September, the rollout was delayed to allow Musk to “purge out the propaganda,” he explained in a separate post.
Musk has long voiced his skepticism toward Wikipedia. In 2024, he labeled the platform “controlled by far-left activists” and called for a halt to donations. In August, he said, “Wikipedia cannot be used as a definitive source for Community Notes, as the editorial control there is extremely left-biased.”
Grokipedia’s content is generated by artificial intelligence, powered by Musk’s AI assistant Grok. An article on the site about Musk himself notes that the Tesla and SpaceX CEO has “influenced broader debates on technological progress, demographic decline, and institutional biases, often via X,” while also acknowledging “criticisms from legacy media outlets that exhibit systemic left-leaning tilts in coverage.”
Unlike Wikipedia, which was founded in 2001 and relies on volunteer contributors, Grokipedia is AI-driven and aims to provide a new approach to online encyclopedic content, though its scope is currently limited compared to the long-established platform.
Wikipedia maintains that it adheres to a “neutral point of view” and remains largely funded by donations from its global user base.
