Jordanian Damaskinos Al-Azrai elected as Bishop of Mariout in Alexandria

Archimandrite Dr. Damaskinos Al-Azrai, a Jordanian national, has been elected as a new Metropolitan (bishop) in the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa, based in Egypt.
The election took place on October 7, 2025, during a Holy Synod meeting presided over by His Beatitude Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria at the Patriarchal Residence in Alexandria. Following the traditional canonical procedures of the Church, the Synod formally appointed Archimandrite Damaskinos as the Bishop of the Diocese of Mariout in Egypt.
The consecration ceremony for the newly elected Metropolitan is scheduled for the morning of Saturday, November 1, at the Patriarchal Monastery of Saint George in Cairo’s Old City. Reports indicate that the event will be attended by several diplomatic representatives and prominent public figures, alongside Metropolitan Venedictos of Bethlehem, a member of the Holy Synod of the Church of Jerusalem, and Archimandrite Dr. Meletios, Abbot of the Monastery of Saints Joachim and Anna and Head of the Ecclesiastical Court in Jerusalem.
Born in 1987, Archimandrite Damaskinos Al-Azrai holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy and a Higher Diploma in Psychology. He is currently pursuing a second doctoral thesis at Aristotle University in Thessaloniki, northern Greece. He will become the second Jordanian to serve as a Metropolitan in the Greek Orthodox Church in Egypt, following Metropolitan Narcissus Qamo.
