VIDEO: Cargo plane crashes into sea in Hong Kong, two dead
Two people were killed early Monday after a cargo plane collided with a ground vehicle while landing in Hong Kong, causing the aircraft to veer off the runway and crash into the sea, authorities said.
Local media shared images and videos showing the plane partially submerged, with its nose floating near the shore and its tail broken.
The Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department said the Boeing 747 cargo plane, arriving from the United Arab Emirates, “veered off the northern runway after landing and crashed into the sea.”
According to initial reports, all four crew members aboard were rescued and taken to hospital, while two ground personnel were killed when the plane struck the vehicle. One victim died at the scene, and the other succumbed after being transported to hospital.
Authorities temporarily closed the northern runway, though the airport’s other runways remain operational. The South China Morning Post reported that dozens of cargo flights were canceled, but passenger flight operations appeared unaffected.
A spokesperson from the Transport and Logistics Bureau said specialized investigative teams “will conduct inquiries into the cause of the incident.”
