Abbas calls for immediate ceasefire, release of all captives and Palestinian detainees
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas welcomed US President Donald Trump’s initiative to halt the war in Gaza and proceed with finalizing the details, in response to Hamas’ positive statements supporting the release of all detainees and expressing constructive engagement at this stage.
Abbas reiterated his appreciation for the significant efforts made by President Trump to end the war in Gaza and move toward lasting peace, and extended his thanks to the Arab and Islamic countries involved in these efforts, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Qatar, the UAE, Turkey, Indonesia, and Pakistan.
He confirmed Palestine’s readiness to work constructively with President Trump immediately, alongside all relevant partners, including the joint presidency of the International Peace Conference in New York, working group leaders, Algeria as the Arab member of the UN Security Council, all Security Council members, and members of the General Assembly, to achieve lasting and just stability and peace in accordance with international legitimacy.
Abbas emphasized: “What matters now is the immediate commitment to a complete ceasefire, the release of all captives and detainees, the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid through UN agencies, preventing displacement or annexation, and beginning the reconstruction process.”
He added: “Sovereignty over the Gaza Strip belongs to the State of Palestine, and the connection between the West Bank and Gaza must be carried out through Palestinian laws and institutions, by a Palestinian administrative committee and a unified Palestinian security force, under a single legal and institutional framework, supported by Arab and international partners.”
Abbas stated that Palestine will continue to work with mediators and relevant partners to ensure the success of these efforts, leading toward lasting peace that ends the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land, including East Jerusalem as its capital.
He reminded the international community of its responsibility to hold 'Israel' accountable for all unilateral actions violating international law, foremost among them settlement expansion, settler violence, attacks on holy sites, and withholding Palestinian tax revenues.
Abbas affirmed that a sovereign, independent Palestinian state is the natural partner for regional stability alongside Israel.
