US embassy in Amman issues urgent security alert after Allenby Bridge shooting
US Embassy in Amman issued an “urgent security alert” to its citizens on Thursday evening, warning of heightened security conditions near the King Hussein/Allenby Bridge crossing.
The alert came after a shooting earlier in the day at the crossing in the occupied West Bank, which left two 'Israelis' dead, according to occupation authorities.
Avoid the area
In its statement, the embassy said it was “closely monitoring” the situation, noting a heavy police presence in the area. It urged American citizens to exercise extreme caution and expect significant delays at the crossing, implicitly advising them to avoid the area for the time being.
The embassy added that it would continue reviewing developments and provide additional information when available.
Recommended safety measures
The alert also included safety guidelines for US nationals:
- Avoid crowds: Steer clear of large gatherings and protests.
- Seek alternatives: Use different routes to avoid potential road closures.
- Stay alert: Remain vigilant to surroundings and report anything unusual.
- Follow news: Stay updated through local media reports.
The embassy further advised citizens to contact Jordanian police at 911 in case of immediate danger and shared its own emergency phone numbers for urgent assistance.
