VIDEO - Gaza-bound flotilla ship hit by drone off Tunisia coast
The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), which is attempting to break the Gaza blockade by sea, said that one of its main boats (Family Boat) was hit by what it “suspects” is a drone off the coast of Tunisia.
The GSF said that all crew members and passengers on the boat, which is flying under the Portuguese flag, are safe and that an investigation has been launched.
“Acts of aggression aimed at intimidating and derailing our mission will not deter us. Our peaceful mission to break the siege on Gaza and stand in solidarity with its people continues with determination and resolve,” the organizers said in a statement.
The U.N. Special Rapporteur on the Palestinian territories Francesca Albanese also reported that the lead boat has been “apparently” attacked by a drone, calling for “urgent protection” for two other boats that are on their way to the Tunis port.
After the incident, Tunisia's national guard said early Tuesday it had detected "no drones".
"According to preliminary findings, a fire broke out in the life jackets on board a ship anchored 50 miles from the port of Sidi Bou Said, which had come from Spain," national guard spokesman Houcem Eddine Jebabli told AFP.
"The investigation is ongoing and no drone has been detected," he added.
