The United States on Friday ordered the deployment of 10 F-35 stealth fighter jets to a Puerto Rico airfield, in a move aimed at reinforcing military operations against drug cartels in the southern Caribbean, Reuters reported.

The decision follows a US strike three days ago killing 11 people on a boat allegedly tied to Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua gang.

Until now however, US authorities have provided no clear legal basis for the operation or details on the type and quantity of drugs aboard the targeted vessel.

Two US officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the advanced aircraft are expected to arrive in Puerto Rico by the end of next week as part of missions against what Washington describes as “narco-terrorist organizations.”

US President Donald Trump is pledging to wage an all-out-war on groups he accuses of smuggling drugs into the United States.

Analysts warn the move could heighten tensions with Venezuela, which Washington accuses of backing trafficking networks.

The F-35 deployment adds to an earlier US military buildup in the region, which already includes seven warships and a nuclear-powered attack submarine.
