The Danish Foreign Ministry announced Wednesday that it has summoned the US chargé d’affaires in Copenhagen following a television report alleging American interference in Greenland’s internal affairs.
Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen issued a firm statement declaring that Denmark “will not tolerate any attempt at external influence” on the autonomous Arctic territory.
Report uncovers US attempts at influence
The move came after Denmark’s public broadcaster reported that at least three US officials, believed to be close to President Donald Trump, had sought sensitive information on historical disputes between Denmark and Greenland.
Among the issues cited was the forced separation of children from their families, a deeply sensitive matter in Greenland’s history.
Trump’s interest in Greenland
President Trump has long expressed interest in Greenland, describing the island as strategically vital for US and global security.
In the past, he stirred controversy by refusing to rule out the use of force to bring the vast Arctic territory under US control.
The latest tension follows a visit in March by US Vice President J.D. Vance to Greenland, which was described as “provocative” by both Copenhagen and Nuuk, Greenland’s capital.
Minister Rasmussen concluded: “We recognize that foreign powers continue to show interest in Greenland and its position within the Kingdom of Denmark. It is therefore not surprising to see attempts to influence our future, but such actions remain unacceptable.”
