Trump: Russia-Ukraine peace efforts now depend on Zelenskyy
US President Donald Trump suggested on Friday that the next steps toward ending the war in Ukraine should come from Kyiv’s leadership, following his high-profile meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
Speaking to Fox News after the summit, Trump said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy now carries the responsibility to build on what was discussed.
“Now it's really up to President Zelenskyy to get it done. And I would also say the European nations, they have to get involved a little bit, but it's up to President Zelenskyy,” Trump remarked.
Putin and Trump described their meeting in Alaska as productive and constructive during a joint press conference.
Putin said the talks were held in a "mutually respectful" atmosphere and emphasized the importance of addressing security concerns, particularly regarding Ukraine. He also noted the historical significance of Alaska as part of shared US-Russia history.
Trump described the meeting as "very productive," acknowledging that while some differences remain, both sides made progress. He said he would follow up with NATO leaders and other relevant parties to continue discussions.
