US President Donald Trump has been publicly backed for the Nobel Peace Prize by leaders from several countries, as well as allies in Washington, following a series of high-profile diplomatic initiatives hosted at the White House and elsewhere. Nominations on his behalf have been submitted by both international figures and US lawmakers.

The Nobel Peace Prize, one of the world’s most prestigious international honors, has not been awarded to a Republican US president since Theodore Roosevelt in 1906. However, several governments endorsing Trump, including Rwanda, 'Israel', Gabon, Azerbaijan, and Cambodia, are led by authoritarian figures, military juntas, or officials facing international legal scrutiny, raising questions about the symbolism of their support.

Pakistan announced on June 20 that it would nominate Trump after diplomatic engagement during a May conflict with India that concluded with a ceasefire. The Pakistani government described the nomination as recognition of Trump’s “decisive diplomatic intervention and pivotal leadership.”

'Israeli' Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu presented Trump with a nomination letter during a July visit to the White House, while Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said in August that he nominated Trump following a ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand, which ended a five-day border clash that left more than 40 people dead and forced around 300,000 to flee.

“[Trump's] consistent pursuit of peace through diplomacy aligns perfectly with Alfred Nobel's vision, honoring those who have made outstanding contributions to international fraternity and the advancement of peace,” Manet said.

Armenia and Azerbaijan also signaled support for a Nobel nomination for Trump after a White House summit on August 8 that resulted in a joint agreement between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

“I think President Trump deserved to have the Nobel Peace Prize,” Pashinyan said. “And we will defend that, we will promote for that.”

In Africa, Rwandan Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe and Gabonese President Brice Oligui Nguema praised Trump for helping to end long-standing conflicts. “Anyone, including President Trump, who would help sizably to bring this conflict to an end deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. Absolutely,” Nduhungirehe told Breitbart News.

Nguema added, “He is now bringing peace back to a region where that was never possible, so I believe that he does deserve a Nobel Peace Prize. That is my opinion.”

Several US lawmakers have also submitted nominations. Representative Buddy Carter of Georgia cited Trump’s involvement in a June ceasefire framework between 'Israel' and Iran. Representative Claudia Tenney of New York said she had nominated Trump twice previously and intends to continue doing so.

“He has done more for world peace than any modern leader,” she wrote on X. Republican Senators Bernie Moreno of Ohio and Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee have likewise called for Trump’s nomination.

Norwegian law professor Anta Alon-Beck also submitted a nomination in early February, citing Trump’s efforts to secure a ceasefire and prisoner release deal in Gaza.

Historically, four US presidents have received the Nobel Peace Prize: Theodore Roosevelt in 1906, Woodrow Wilson in 1919, Jimmy Carter in 2002, and Barack Obama in 2009. Other American officials, including Vice Presidents Al Gore and Charles Dawes, and Secretaries of State Elihu Root, Frank B. Kellogg, George C. Marshall, and Henry Kissinger, have also been laureates.

Trump defended his record, stating, “I've stopped six wars, I'm averaging about a war a month.” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt added, “It is well past time that President Trump was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.” Former National Security Adviser John Bolton, however, criticized the push, saying on ABC, “I don’t think what [Trump] has done materially changes the situations in any of those circumstances … I think what Trump has done is make it clear that he wants a Nobel Peace Prize more than anything else.”

The nomination deadline for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize closed on January 31. The Norwegian Nobel Committee does not publicly confirm nominees, and the official candidate list will remain sealed for 50 years. The 2025 laureate is scheduled to be announced on October 10.

Meanwhile, Trump has continued diplomatic outreach, proposing ceasefires, arranging high-level meetings, and hosting talks with international leaders. His efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war, however, remain unresolved.
