Government amends vehicle license plate system in Jordan

The Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Jafar Hassan, approved amendments Saturday to Jordan's vehicle license plate regulations.

The new system will introduce distinct letter codes on plates for government, temporary entry, and diplomatic vehicles to indicate their affiliation:

• Prime Minister and Ministers: PM
• Senate: SN
• House of Representatives: PR
• Judicial Council: JC
• Government Entities: GV
• Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority: AQ
• Diplomatic Missions: CD
• Temporary Entry: TM

The amendment does not apply to license plate numbers for private, public, or cargo vehicles.

In a separate decision, the Cabinet also allocated all proceeds from the auction of “special” license plate numbers by the Drivers and Vehicle Licensing Department to the University Student Support Fund, effective next academic semester.

This decision supplements the fund's current budget allocation, which was increased by 50% to 30 million dinars in this year's general budget. The move aims to expand the number of university students benefiting from financial aid.

The license plate system amendment, which uses letters instead of numbers, is expected to enhance transparency, clarity, and improve oversight and tracking of government vehicles.

This system is adopted in many countries worldwide and is considered a best practice. The new system also allows for the buying and selling of special license plate numbers without requiring a vehicle ownership transfer.
