Trump’s immigration crackdown losing public support: Polls
Public opinion is shifting against US President Donald Trump’s aggressive immigration policies, according to new polls released Sunday, as he marked six months into his second term with boasts of “reviving” the country.
Trump, who returned to power last year campaigning on a promise of mass deportations and tough immigration enforcement, is facing growing criticism from voters over his hardline measures. The president had frequently referred to undocumented migrants as “savages” and “animals,” fueling outrage among his opponents while energizing his base.
- Majority of Americans oppose mass raids -
A CNN survey found that 55 percent of Americans believe recent immigration raids have gone too far, a 10-point increase from February, just weeks after Trump took office. The raids, often captured in viral videos showing masked agents detaining people in public, have become a symbol of his renewed crackdown.
Opposition to building large-scale detention centers has also grown, with 57 percent against the plan and only 26 percent in favor, according to CNN.
Similarly, a CBS News poll revealed that 56 percent of respondents think Trump’s administration is targeting migrants who pose no public safety threat, up from 47 percent last month.
Trump’s overall approval rating on immigration has dropped to 49 percent, down from 54 percent last month and 59 percent in February.
- Strong Republican support -
While support among Republicans remains overwhelming, 91 percent back Trump’s deportation policies, opposition among independents has climbed to 59 percent, and among Democrats to 86 percent, the CBS poll showed.
Trump’s broader approval rating is also slipping. Only 42 percent of Americans approve of his overall job performance, compared to 53 percent in February.
- Trump celebrates six months in power -
Despite the polling decline, Trump celebrated his six-month milestone with a visit to his golf club in Virginia and a triumphant post on Truth Social.
“Six months is not a long time to have totally revived a major Country,” he wrote. “One year ago our Country was DEAD, with almost no hope of revival. Now the United States is the most respected Country anywhere in the World.”
