Egyptian authorities thwart planned attacks by Hasm Movement
Egypt’s Ministry of Interior announced Sunday that security forces thwarted a planned "terrorist operation" by the Hasm movement, the armed wing of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, killing two suspects in a raid in Cairo’s Boulaq Ad Dakrour district.
According to the ministry, recent intelligence revealed that Hasm leaders based in Turkey were preparing to revive the group’s activities and launch attacks targeting security and economic facilities. One operative, who had reportedly received advanced military training in a neighboring country, illegally infiltrated Egypt to carry out the planned attacks.
The ministry also cited a video circulating on social media showing Hasm members conducting desert training exercises and threatening new attacks.
- Wanted leaders behind the plot -
The ministry identified several Hasm leaders accused of orchestrating the plot, including:
- Yahia Al Sayed Ibrahim Mohamed Mousa, a founding member and head of Hasm’s military structure, sentenced to death for the assassination of Egypt’s Public Prosecutor and to multiple life sentences for attempted attacks on high-profile figures and a plot to target the presidential plane.
- Mohamed Rafik Ibrahim Menaa, serving life sentences for attempting to assassinate senior officials and forging official documents for fugitive Brotherhood members.
- Alaa Ali Ali Mohammed Al-Samahi, sentenced to life for several terrorism cases, including the attempted assassination of Alexandria’s security chief.
- Mohamed Abdel Hafiz Abdallah Abdel Hafiz, sentenced to life in several terrorism-related cases, including assassination attempts and the plot to target the presidential plane.
- Ali Mahmoud Mohamed Abdel Wanees, sentenced to life in multiple cases, including attempting to attack the presidential plane, the assassination of Lt. Col. Majed Abdel Razek, and other terrorism-related offenses.
- Raid and shootout -
Security forces tracked Ahmed Mohamed Abdel Razek Ahmed Ghoneim, a convict sentenced to death for killing police officers in Sharqia and to life imprisonment for other terror charges. Ghoneim had entered Egypt illegally via desert routes and was hiding in an apartment with Ihab Abdel Latif Mohamed Abdel Qader, wanted for plotting attacks on senior officials.
After obtaining authorization from the Supreme State Security Prosecution (SSSP), security forces raided the hideout. The accused opened fire “indiscriminately,” killing a passerby and injuring a police officer who was attempting to rescue the civilian. Security forces returned fire, killing both suspects.
The Supreme State Security Prosecution has launched an investigation.
The Interior Ministry reaffirmed its determination to combat the Muslim Brotherhood’s “terrorist plots” and safeguard national security, stressing that security operations against such threats would continue.
