UN nuclear watchdog addresses 'Israeli' attacks on Iran in first statement

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) raised alarm over Israeli Occupation's strikes targeting nuclear facilities in Iran, warning of the potential regional and global consequences such attacks could trigger.

In a detailed statement released early Friday morning, the IAEA confirmed it had been informed of the operation by the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF), which reportedly impacted several key Iranian nuclear sites. The Iranian nuclear safety authorities have since confirmed that the Natanz enrichment facility sustained damage, although no elevated radiation levels have been recorded. Other major sites at Esfahan and Fordow, according to Iran, remain unaffected for now.

IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi underscored the severity of the situation, reiterating that "nuclear facilities must never be attacked, regardless of the context or circumstances, as it could harm both people and the environment." He emphasized that such attacks threaten nuclear safety and security, and contravene international law and longstanding resolutions of the IAEA General Conference.

Citing past resolutions, specifically GC(XXIX)/RES/444 and GC(XXXIV)/RES/533, Grossi reminded member states that any armed attack or threat against nuclear facilities devoted to peaceful purposes constitutes a violation of the UN Charter and the Statute of the IAEA.

The Agency is currently in direct communication with both Iranian and 'Israeli' authorities and maintains contact with its inspectors on the ground. "The safety of our staff is of paramount importance," Grossi stated, noting that precautionary steps are being taken to ensure their protection.

Grossi also expressed his willingness to travel to the region at the earliest opportunity to assess the situation firsthand and ensure the safety and security of nuclear installations.

The Director General concluded his remarks by reaffirming the IAEA's commitment to its mandate and calling for "maximum restraint" from all parties involved. "Despite the current military actions and heightened tensions, it is clear that the only sustainable path forward, for Iran, for Israel, the entire region, and the international community, is one grounded in dialogue and diplomacy," he said.

The IAEA pledged to continue monitoring the situation closely, offering technical assistance as needed.
