LA Mayor declares state of local emergency, imposes curfew

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass declared a state of emergency Tuesday and imposed an overnight curfew across the city’s downtown area following several consecutive nights of unrest, property damage, and escalating tensions.

“I have declared a local emergency and issued a curfew for downtown Los Angeles to stop the vandalism, to stop the looting,” Bass announced during a press conference.

Effective June 10, 8 PM-6 AM.

The curfew took effect at 8:00 PM and aimed to disperse crowds that had continued to gather despite growing law enforcement presence. Agence France-Presse journalists reported that numerous protesters remained in the area as the order came into force.

By late Tuesday night, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) began conducting mass arrests, stating that crowds were still present in defiance of the curfew.

“Multiple groups continue to congregate on 1st St between Spring and Alameda within the designated downtown curfew area,” LAPD said in a post on X. “Those groups are being addressed and mass arrests are being initiated. Curfew is in effect.”

The protests, sparked by growing outrage over recent immigration-related arrests, had prompted heightened tensions throughout the city, particularly in the downtown core.

City officials have not confirmed how long the emergency order and curfew will remain in place, but law enforcement indicated that efforts to disperse unauthorized gatherings would continue overnight.
