Syria, “Israel” said to hold direct talks on "joint security"
Syrian and “Israeli” officials are holding direct face-to-face talks that aim to calm tensions and prevent conflict, according to Reuters citing five officials familiar with the matter.
“Israeli” has launched attacks and occupied territory inside Syria since the rebels ousted longtime president Bashar al-Assad in December, 2024.
The recent direct talks build on back-channel talks made at an earlier time between the two sides.
Ahmad al-Dalati, a senior Syrian security official and the governor of Quneitra, participated in the –several– meetings that took place in the border region, including in territory not occupied by “Israel”, according to the report.
The talks focus on joint security and preventing conflict, but are said they might help pave the way for broader political understandings, the report adds.
"For now, they are about peace, as in the absence of war, rather than normalization," said one source.
