Trump’s tariffs raise flower prices for Mother’s Day in US

Mother’s Day in the United States, celebrated on May 11, 2025, is a key season for florists, however, President Donald Trump’s tariffs are driving up flower prices, dampening the holiday’s vibrancy.

A florist told CNN, “We have to charge more, and it’s definitely affecting sales.” With 80 percent of US cut flowers imported from Colombia (60 percent of the USD 2.26 billion market) and Ecuador (25 percent), tariffs have increased costs. Lisianthus prices have doubled, roses are up 10-50 percent, and Krivachek’s popular Mother’s Day arrangement has risen from USD 100 to USD 125.

A LendingTree survey shows a 14 percent drop in Mother’s Day spending due to tariffs and economic concerns. Krivachek reports a 30 percent sales decline, with some customers turning to DIY arrangements. Debra Prinzing of the Slow Flowers Society noted the U.S. industry’s reliance on imports, despite local sourcing efforts.

The Society of American Florists highlighted the industry’s adaptability, with florists ordering early and strengthening grower relationships. Krivachek, while sourcing locally when possible, still relies on imports for variety, especially for weddings.
