The Vatican officially closed the Sistine Chapel to visitors on Monday as it begins the process of preparing for the conclave, the secretive gathering where Catholic cardinals select the next pope.

"Notice is hereby given that the Sistine Chapel will be closed to the public as of Monday, 28 April 2025 for the requirements of the conclave," read a statement posted on the Vatican Museums' website. The closure comes as the Church anticipates announcing the official start date for the conclave.

The Sistine Chapel, famous for its Renaissance frescoes by Michelangelo, traditionally serves as the venue where cardinals from across the globe convene to cast their votes under strict secrecy until a new pontiff is chosen.
