At least 32 people were killed and more than 80 others injured after two Russian ballistic missiles struck the center of Sumy in northern Ukraine on Sunday morning, Ukrainian officials said.

The attack, which occurred as residents gathered for Palm Sunday, is one of the deadliest strikes in Ukraine this year.

Local authorities said the missiles hit a crowded area in the city center, causing widespread damage. Videos posted on social media show destroyed buildings, burning vehicles, and emergency crews rescuing people from the rubble.

“On this bright Palm Sunday, our community has suffered a terrible tragedy,” said acting mayor Artem Kobzar. “Unfortunately, we already know of more than 20 deaths.” The toll later rose to 32 dead and at least 84 wounded, including 10 children.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strike as a “horrific act of terror” and called for a firm international response. “Only filthy scum can act like this,” he said. “We expect the world to respond, not just with words, but with action.”

In a separate development, Witkoff, US President Donald Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine, met with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday in St. Petersburg to discuss prospects for a peace deal. Trump has urged Russia to “get moving” toward ending the war.

Following the Sumy attack, Zelenskyy renewed his call for the US and European countries to increase pressure on Russia, saying the strike underscores the need for accountability.

Rescue efforts in Sumy are ongoing. Hospitals remain overwhelmed, and emergency services continue searching for survivors trapped under debris.
