John Cena
From hero to villain: John Cena embraces heel persona in WWE
John Cena turned heel at the recent WWE Elimination Chamber event. Cena’s surprising turn came after his victory in the Men’s Elimination Chamber match, where he joined forces with The Rock to attack Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes, leaving fans in awe and sparking widespread buzz.
In professional wrestling, a "heel" refers to a character who is a villain or antagonist. Heels are typically portrayed as arrogant, deceitful, and unlikable, often using underhanded tactics to win matches and generate negative reactions from the audience. They contrast with "faces," or heroes, who are portrayed as the good guys and receive support from fans.
Speaking during the WWE Elimination Chamber Post-Show, Chief content officer of WWE Triple H shared his thoughts on the magnitude of Cena’s decision to switch sides.
“A lot of surprises tonight, incredible matches, incredible moments, and then John Cena drops a nuke,” he said. “I’ve been fortunate to be around a lot of the biggest things in this business in the last 30 years. I don’t know that I’ve ever felt a more powerful moment, of the entirety of John Cena’s career being the one guy that you never really…when he really became John Cena and the champion, you didn’t see this moment coming.”
Reflecting on Cena’s career and what led to his heel turn, Triple H explained how a shift in perspective happens when a wrestler nears the end of their career. "When you get to a place in your career when you know undoubtedly you have months left on your career and your dream and the thing that launched you to the rest of the world, it puts you in a different perspective,” he continued. “It puts you in a place of, it is now or never...”
He went on to emphasize that Cena had a choice: to rest on his legacy or to challenge himself until the very end. "You couldn’t really blame John for doing that, for just saying, ‘I’m gonna come in and I’m gonna ride the nostalgia wave for the next ten months. I’m gonna wave at everybody, I’m gonna do the tour...’ Or somebody like him can double down and say, 'Screw it, I want to be challenged right to the last moment.' That’s the beauty of John Cena."
Triple H further praised Cena for his willingness to take risks and push the boundaries of his own career. “John has always been the guy to do what is best here, but he’s always been the guy to jump out on a limb. He’s always been the guy to get out there, stick his neck on the line and gamble on himself, and he did that again tonight. It was incredible to watch.”
Recalling the moment Cena stood alongside The Rock and Travis Scott in the aisle, Triple H described it as one of the most epic moments in WWE history. “There was a moment when Cody was down in the ring and Pat and Cole and Wade were out there trying to help him to his feet, and Rock, Travis Scott, and John Cena were standing in the aisle that I thought to myself, ‘Holy sh*t.’ It’ll never get any bigger than that. That is just an epic moment.”
Triple H firmly believes that this night will go down as one of the most memorable in WWE’s history. “I feel like this is one of those nights where, 20 years from now, people will look back and say, ‘Holy sh*t, that night in Toronto, and it was incredible.’ This was one of those nights where I think people thought, ‘This will be a good PLE, and we just blew that expectation out of the water.'"
Reflecting on the overwhelming reaction to Cena’s heel turn, Triple H admitted, “Watching it and having seen these kinds of things the majority of my life, 30 years in my career... I feel like this was one of the biggest things I’ve ever seen happen and be a part of. The look on people’s faces, people were stunned. I gotta tell you, it felt like one of the biggest things I’ve ever been a part of.”
