Kremlin: Putin invited Trump to visit Moscow
US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke for an hour and a half in a phone call, discussing efforts to end the war in Ukraine and agreeing to begin negotiations immediately.
"President Putin ... agreed with Trump that a long-term settlement could be reached through peaceful negotiations," the statement read, emphasizing the potential for a negotiated resolution.
"We agreed to work together, very closely, including visiting each other's nations," Trump announced on social media following the conversation. He added that he would be reaching out to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to inform him of the discussion.
Leading the US side of the negotiations will be Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, and Ambassador Steve Witkoff, according to Trump.
The former president described the exchange as "highly productive," saying both leaders "agreed we want to stop the millions of deaths taking place in the war with Russia and Ukraine."
Trump also took a moment to thank Putin for "his time and effort with respect to this call" and for facilitating the recent release of Marc Fogel, a Pennsylvania teacher who had been imprisoned in Russia. Trump noted that he personally greeted Fogel at the White House upon his return.
