Donald Trump's inauguration as 47th US president
Donald Trump headed to his swearing-in as president for a historic second term Monday, promising a new "golden age" in the United States as the world braces for the return of his unpredictable leadership.
Trump and outgoing President Joe Biden traveled by motorcade together to the US Capitol, where the inauguration was being held indoors due to bitter cold.
The two men were seated in a vehicle together en route to the Capitol, where a ceremony to swear Trump in as the 47th president of the United States is due to begin in the coming hour.
Earlier, they and their spouses met for a traditional tea at the White House.
"Welcome home," Biden said to Trump as he and First Lady Jill Biden greeted their successors at the front door to the presidential home.
The frigid weather has forced 78-year-old Trump's inauguration indoors, missing out on the customary massive crowds along the National Mall. However, the first hours of the most extraordinary comeback in US politics will be a blaze of activity.
Trump earlier attended a service at a church near the White House -- the same church where he controversially posed with a Bible in 2020 just minutes after security forces forcefully ejected peaceful Black Lives Matter protesters.
At sunrise on Monday, the National Mall, where the inauguration was originally due to be held, was largely empty.
Due to the intense cold, Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance will take the oath inside the domed Rotunda of the Capitol -- as Ronald Reagan did in 1985 -- rather than in front of a huge crowd on the National Mall.

"I wish we could have had a better relationship": Trump about Biden
Trump expressed regret over his strained relationship with President Biden, stating, "I wish we could have had a better relationship." He also mentioned how he had planned to address more "controversial" topics in his speech, including the "J6 hostages" and Biden's pardons for his family members, but was persuaded not to by those around him.
After the Rotunda ceremony, Trump made more casual remarks to a waiting crowd at the Capitol’s Emancipation Hall. He joked that they were a "younger, far more beautiful crowd" than the one in the Rotunda.
Reflecting on the inauguration's indoor setting, he initially thought it was a mistake due to the sunny weather, but later referred to the sun as "deceptive" for hiding the cold and suggested future inaugurations be held indoors.
Trump noted the room was "perfect" at 72 degrees. He also asked the audience about his speech’s delivery, which was met with cheers.
