Hamas’ military spokesperson Abu Obaida issued a video statement today, after the first round of captive exchanges took place in the Gaza Strip, kicking off the first phase of a multi-month ceasefire deal.

In his first appearance since Oct. 7, 2024, Abu Obaida praised the “sacrifices and great bloodshed” of the Palestinian people, adding that they will not be in vain.

“Operation Aqsa Typhoon has set a unique example of resilience and historical achievement,” he added.

"We have created an unparalleled historical epic on the global stage."

Abu Obaida described the operation as the final nail into the coffin of the Israeli Occupation.

He said the region was transformed after Oct. 7, 2023 and introduced “new dynamics to the conflict with the occupation.”

“It opened new fronts of combat, forcing the occupation to seek support from international powers.”

“The battle conveyed a powerful message to the world: this occupation is a fabrication, with far-reaching implications for the region,” he continued.

He praised the fighting abilities of Hamas and other resistance factions in Gaza, saying that the battle was “overwhelmingly imbalanced” in terms of military and morality.

“While we attacked enemy forces, they resorted to unprecedented levels of brutality and savagery against our people”

“The greatness of this battle is epitomized by its leaders joining the ranks of martyrs, including Haniyeh, Al-Arouri, and Sinwar.”

“Efforts to integrate [Israel] into the region will face an unyielding tide of awareness and resistance,” he warned.

On the current ceasefire arrangement, Abu Obaida says “the agreement reached could have been made a year ago if it had aligned with Netanyahu’s ambitions.”

“We are committed to the ceasefire agreement, but this depends on the enemy’s adherence.”
