The coroner in Los Angeles confirmed that the death toll from the fire has risen to 16.

The county coroner released a list of the deceased, indicating that five victims were found in the Palisades fire area and 11 in the Eaton fire area.

The fires erupted in the second-largest US city, devastating large sections and destroying over 12,000 buildings and 15,000 hectares of land. US President Joe Biden described the scene during a White House meeting as "like a war zone and bombings."

Despite many firefighters working to contain the blazes, evacuation orders were issued for the eastern part of Pacific Palisades, including the renowned Getty Center. This museum, partially constructed with fire-resistant stone, houses approximately 125,000 art pieces.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has warned that winds are expected to pick up again starting Saturday, after decreasing on Friday, complicating containment efforts.

Local authorities have been criticized for their preparedness and response, though it is still too early to determine the primary cause of the fires.

Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin Crowley highlighted ongoing shortages of personnel and financial resources in an interview with KTTV, a Fox News affiliate.

Crowley attended a press conference on Saturday, at which LA Mayor Karen Bass sought to downplay tensions, stating that political leaders, relief agencies, and security forces were "united in their efforts."
