Algeria is trying to humiliate France, France's interior minister said on Friday, after arresting several Algerian social media influencers for what it says is inciting violence in a growing crisis between France and Algeria.

"Algeria is seeking to humiliate France," Bruno Retailleau said on a visit to the western city of Nantes.

"I think we have reached an extremely worrying threshold with Algeria," he said, adding France "cannot tolerate" an "unacceptable situation."

In early January, French authorities arrested three Algerian social media influencers accused of inciting violence through their online platforms – according to French authorities and media.

One such influencer, known as "Zazo Youssef," was detained in Brest for allegedly posting videos on TikTok that called for attacks in France and acts of violence in Algeria. He is scheduled to stand trial on February 24, facing charges that could result in up to seven years in prison and a EUR 100,000 fine if convicted.

Another influencer, identified as "Imad Tintin," was arrested near Grenoble after allegedly posting a video urging followers to commit violent acts on French soil. He is also facing charges related to incitement of terrorism.

A third individual, known as "Doualemn," was apprehended in Montpellier for similar allegations of inciting violence against protesters opposing the Algerian regime.

These arrests occur amid a backdrop of strained diplomatic relations. In July 2024, France shifted its longstanding position on Western Sahara by recognizing Moroccan sovereignty over the disputed territory, a move that angered Algeria and led to the withdrawal of its ambassador from Paris.

In December 2024, Algeria summoned the French ambassador, alleging that France's General Directorate of External Security (DGSE) had been involved in "hostile operations and maneuvers" to undermine Algeria's stability.

According to Algerian media, the DGSE was accused of trying to recruit former militants within Algeria, although France has not officially commented on these allegations.
