Jordanian citizen Osama Bashir Al-Bataineh, recently released from Syria's Sednaya Prison, arrived in Jordan on Tuesday after spending 38 years in captivity.
Al-Bataineh reached the Jaber Border Crossing, where authorities verified his identity before reuniting him with his family. Al-Bataineh hails from the northern Jordanian city of Irbid.
Videos circulating online show Al-Bataineh appearing visibly exhausted and shaken, bearing the marks of decades of imprisonment. His release has sparked widespread reactions, with many Jordanians expressing both shock and relief.
Social media users noted that many families of detainees had lost hope of seeing their loved ones again, with some presuming them long deceased.
The mass release of prisoners came in the wake of the Syrian opposition's successful toppling of Bashar al-Assad's regime early Sunday, leading to the opening of prisons and liberation of prisoners.
