The Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) said that the United States embassy in Beirut, Lebanon was attacked by a gunman holding the Syrian nationality.

The LAF said the gunfire was directed towards the US Embassy, after which army personnel fired back at the source and wounded the gunman – an investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances.

Roya’s correspondent in Lebanon said that "one of the guards at the Embassy was injured, one of the gunmen was killed, and another was injured and arrested, while the search continues for a third gunman."

Initial media reports said that a number of gunmen attacked the embassy in the Awkar Area in Mount Lebanon; and one of them has been killed.

“At 8:34 a.m. local time, small arms fire was reported in the vicinity of the entrance to the U.S. Embassy,” the US Embassy said in a statement.

“Thanks to the quick reaction of the LAF, ISF, and our Embassy security team, our facility and our team are safe. Investigations are underway and we are in close contact with host country law enforcement,” it added.
