Lord Jacob Rothschild, a British investment banker and a member of the Rothschild banking family, died at the age of 87 - his family has announced.

Rothschild was chairman of RIT Capital Partners plc since 1988 before stepping down in 2019 - he was considered to be the most senior member of the Rothschild family.

The Rothschild foundation stated, “We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Lord Rothschild, businessman, entrepreneur, philanthropist and cultural leader. He will be greatly missed by his family, his colleagues and his many friends.”

“Our father Jacob was a towering presence in many people’s lives,” the Rothschild family said in a statement to news agency PA, “[he will] be buried in accordance with Jewish custom in a small family ceremony.”
