20,000 babies born into “Gaza war hell,” says UNICEF
Approximately 20,000 babies have been born in Gaza since the start of the aggression on the Strip, one every 10 minutes - according to UNICEF, the United Nations children’s agency.
UNICEF spokeswoman Tess Ingram, back from a recent visit to Gaza, described mothers bleeding to death and one nurse who had performed emergency C-section surgeries on six dead women.
"That's a baby born into this horrendous war every 10 minutes," Ingram told reporters, "becoming a mother should be a time for celebration. In Gaza, it's another child delivered into hell.”
She stressed that the shock effects of war directly affects newborns, leading to increased rates of malnutrition, growth problems, and other health complications.
Ingram said that pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and infants are living in inhumane conditions, including temporary shelters, inadequate nutrition, and unsafe water. This exposes nearly 135,000 children under the age of two to the risk of acute malnutrition.
