Syrian media reported Thursday that fighter jets conducted multiple airstrikes targeting locations described as drug smugglers' hideouts in the areas of "Arman and Malih" south of the Syrian governorate of Al-Suwayda.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, on its “X” account, formerly known as Twitter, stated that fighter jets, likely to be Jordanian, targeted sites in the villages of Malih and Arman in the countryside of Damascus near the Jordanian border, close to the southern governorate of Al-Suwayda. The airstrikes resulted in the death of 6 “smugglers” in Arman - per the statement.

Syrian media outlets indicated that these fighter jets were likely to be Jordanian.

The Jordanian Armed Forces - Arab Army have neither confirmed nor denied these reports.

In recent months, the border with Syria has witnessed increased activity in drugs and weapons smuggling, which prompted the Jordanian Armed Forces (JAF) to actively engage in intense confrontations with smugglers attempting to infiltrate across the border.

Earlier in January, Syrian media revealed that the airstrikes that targeted a residence suspected of a "major" drug dealer in the village of Al-Shu'ab in the Al-Suwayda governorate. Similar airstrikes, also attributed to Jordanian fighter jets, targeted warehouses near the village of Al-Gharieh in Al-Suwayda.

Since Dec. 2023, the JAF has intensified its campaign against drug traffickers. Border Guard units clashed with armed groups across the northern border, arresting several members and seizing rockets, mines, weapons, and drugs intended to be smuggled into the kingdom.

In previous statements, Major General Youssef Ahmed Al-Hnaity, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the JAF, affirmed that the armed forces will not hesitate to "use all their capabilities, resources, and capacities to prevent infiltration and smuggling operations and confront them forcefully, to preserve the security and stability of the country and the safety of its citizens, and to pursue anyone intending to tamper with its capabilities."

Al-Hnaity emphasized that “the armed forces are continuing, determined and resolute in preventing these operations, facing all forms of threats on the border fronts, and pursuing the armed groups behind them to protect the nation and its assets.”
